Control dampers: function and benefits

A control damper is an important flow control component in industrial ducting systems, which also incorporate components such as duct bends and pipe couplings. It consists of a movable damper disc that rotates around an axis inside a housing. Unlike a throttle valve in the intake system of an internal combustion engine, this industrial version is used to regulate fluid flows in process systems.

The main functions of a control damper include:

Continuously variable adjustment of flow rates in ducting and pipework
Restriction or, depending on the design, shut-off of fluid flows
Control of process operations through targeted flow restriction
Adjustment of pressure conditions in ducting and piping systems

Control dampers also play an important role in extraction systems. They allow the air volume flow, and therefore the extraction performance, to be adjusted to the actual demand. In systems equipped with suitable controls, this adjustment can take place automatically, for example when an additional extraction arm for welding fume extraction is put into operation at another workstation. When fewer extraction points are active, the airflow can be reduced accordingly. A faulty or incorrectly adjusted control damper can lead to uncontrolled airflow, energy losses or insufficient extraction performance. Regular inspection and maintenance therefore help ensure reliable and energy-efficient operation.
