What is an extraction fan?
An extraction fan, also known as an extraction blower, is an industrial fan that uses controlled negative pressure to capture air, gases or solid particles at an extraction point and transport them through a ducting system.
Unlike a standard ventilation fan, an extraction fan is designed for continuous operation under industrial conditions. High particle loads, elevated temperatures and demanding conveyed materials can therefore be handled reliably.
Which extraction applications require a fan?
An extraction fan is required wherever production processes generate chips, dust or particle-laden air. Typical conveyed materials include wood chips, metal chips, grinding dust, grain and particles produced during milling, turning and sawing processes.
Different impeller designs are required depending on the conveyed material. WELAfix therefore offers two specialised product ranges:

Extraction fan for chip transport – with open impeller
An extraction fan with an open impeller is recommended for the pneumatic transport of coarse bulk materials such as wood chips, metal chips or wood chippings. The open design allows coarse particles to pass through the impeller without accumulating or causing blockages.
This type of fan is particularly suitable for the following industries and applications:
• Woodworking and joinery workshops (chips and sawdust)
• Agriculture (pneumatic grain transport)
• Plastics processing (granules and plastic chips)
• Recycling plants (bulk material transport)
Depending on the system design, combining the fan with a pre-separator or cyclone separator may be useful in order to separate coarse particles from the airflow before filtration.
Extraction fan for dust-laden air mixed with chips
If the extracted air contains both fine dust particles and chips, an extraction fan with an adapted impeller geometry is required. In these applications, the fans are often combined with filter boxes to process and clean the air within the system.
This type of fan is particularly suitable for the following industries and applications:
• Metalworking and mechanical engineering (metal chips and grinding dust)
• Ceramics industry (fine dust and particle mixtures)
• Milling and turning processes (chips mixed with dust)
• Wood industry (fine dust mixed with coarse chips)
What is the difference between centrifugal and axial fans?
A centrifugal fan is the right choice for extracting chips and dust-laden air. An axial fan, by contrast, is primarily designed for general room ventilation without significant particle loads.
In a centrifugal fan, the air enters the impeller from the side and is discharged radially outwards. This generates high pressure, enabling the fan to overcome the resistance of longer ducting systems. An axial fan moves the air parallel to the axis of rotation and is therefore suitable for large airflow volumes at low resistance.
